About Montevideo

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, with approximately 1.3 million inhabitants. The city combines historic architecture, modern cultural areas, and a long waterfront along the Río de la Plata. Among its main landmarks are Plaza Independencia, the Rambla — a coastal avenue stretching over 20 km — and traditional sites such as the Mercado del Puerto. During the event period, spring will be beginning, bringing mild temperatures, generally between 12°C and 22°C. The city’s electrical voltage is 220V, and outlets follow the C, F, and L plug types.

How to Get to Montevideo

Montevideo has one main airport: Carrasco International Airport – General Cesáreo L. Berisso (MVD), located approximately 20 km from the city center.

The city also has the Tres Cruces Bus Terminal, which integrates urban, intercity, and international bus routes, located about 3 km from Plaza Independencia.

For those arriving by car, the main access routes are:

  • Ruta Interbalnearia (IB), connecting Montevideo to the airport and the eastern coastal cities;

  • Ruta 1, linking the capital to Colonia del Sacramento and the border with Argentina;

  • Ruta 5, which connects Montevideo to the country’s interior, heading north.

Safety Tips

As in any large urban center and tourist destination, increased attention is recommended. Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid wearing jewelry or carrying items that may attract attention. Do not leave your bag unattended; always keep it close to your body. Avoid keeping your wallet in your back pocket, especially in crowded areas, and limit unnecessary phone use while walking. Caution is always essential.
